AI-redesigned proteins improve enzyme evolution
Nature reports that researchers used ProteinMPNN to redesign three botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) proteases for experimental enzyme evolution.
- The redesigned starting points produced variants with better stability and full catalytic efficiency.
- The authors argue that these AI-designed enzymes may be more mutationally robust than the wild-type proteins.
- That makes them better scaffolds for evolving new functions in side-by-side phage-assisted evolution experiments.
