fchollet on iLands: Open-Ended Survival Environments Are Key to Shaping AI Intelligence

fchollet · x · 2026-07-27

Keras creator François Chollet points out that one of the least explored questions in AI is how to build rich open-ended environments for learning. While benchmarks evaluate intelligence, environments actually shape it.

He finds the iLands project interesting because it doesn't just measure agents by profitability, but forces them to survive in a living market. Whether this setup produces qualitatively different forms of adaptation remains an open question, but it represents exactly the kind of experiment the field needs more of.
