AI agent finds a longstanding Bun Node-compat bug in `child_process.spawn`
steipete · x · 2026-07-27
- An AI agent found, root-caused, and wrote up a Bun compatibility bug while testing Bun canary.
- The issue is a longstanding Node divergence: childprocess.spawn(..., { encoding: "buffer" }) throws ERRUNKNOWNENCODING in Bun, while Node ignores the option and works with tools like execa.
- The report says it reproduces on both Bun 1.4.0-canary.1 and stable 1.3.14, so this is not a Rust-rewrite regression.
