Moonshot's Kimi K3 license allows broad use, but adds commercial thresholds above $20M
natolambert · x · 2026-07-27
Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 license is not MIT-like in practice: it allows broad use, but adds commercial triggers for larger companies.
- The license permits use, modification, redistribution, sublicensing, and even selling copies of the software.
- But if a company’s annual revenue exceeds $20M, it must negotiate a separate commercial deal before using Kimi K3 for commercial purposes.
- If a product using Kimi K3 exceeds 100M monthly active users or $20M monthly revenue, it must prominently display “Kimi K3” in the UI.
- The license also exempts internal use and use through Moonshot’s official products or certified inference partners.
