The reply adds that when the hardware owner is also the lab—such as Google with DeepMind, or Microsoft with OpenAI—the integrated stack can capture both model and infrastructure margin, which may make proprietary models more attractive.
That slightly changes the incentive structure described earlier: instead of only selling GPUs or cloud capacity, the integrated company may prefer to keep the model closed so it can maximize returns across the full stack.
