PanoLOG turns 360° panoramas into large-scale outdoor 3D reconstructions

- Researchers from Insta360 Research, Wuhan University, Sun Yat-sen University and others proposed PanoLOG, a large-scale outdoor 3D reconstruction method for panoramic input.
- They also released Pano360, the first large-scale benchmark for panoramic outdoor reconstruction.
- The key idea is to replace the usual visibility-based partitioning with a gradient-contribution-based scheme, because in 360° panoramas almost every camera can see almost every block.
- PanoLOG uses a two-stage pipeline:
- a global coarse reconstruction stage with panoramic monocular depth supervision and an explicit sky sphere,
- then a block-wise refinement stage with adaptive spatial partitioning, camera-to-block assignment by gradient importance, and periodic opacity resets.
- The method is designed for ERP panoramic images and projects 3D Gaussians through the ERP Jacobian rather than a pinhole camera model.
- On Pano360, Ricoh360, and 360Roam, the paper reports state-of-the-art rendering quality and smaller model size, all trained on a single RTX 4090 in the described setup.
