AI directory operator says 1,000 tools later, most standalone AI apps still die fast

The author runs AI Parabellum, an AI tools directory, and says they have tracked more than 1,000 AI tools over time.
Their main observation: most new AI tools will not survive 12 months. The ones that disappear usually:
- are thin wrappers around a single API with little value added
- get a Product Hunt spike and then stop being maintained
- sit in categories that OpenAI, Google, or Anthropic are obviously going to absorb
The tools that survive tend to:
- solve a narrow workflow problem instead of being a generic “chat with AI” app
- add features beyond the raw model API
- stay actively maintained
- target a clearly defined audience
They also argue that standalone AI tools are under more pressure as frontier models improve, and that durable tools are increasingly the ones embedded deep in a specific workflow.
The post ends by asking whether people are now using fewer tools as models get better, or more.
