A large-scale study of 775,323 scientists finds that since 2022, LLM adoption has changed how researchers explore topics, collaborate, and divide labor.
- Scientists have increasingly published across more intellectually distant fields and entered areas they had not worked in before.
- The effect is strongest among senior researchers and among scientists from non-English-speaking lower- and middle-income countries, including China.
- Researchers with stronger AI-writing signals were already more interdisciplinary before LLMs, and the gap widened after 2022.
- Their collaboration networks also became more interdisciplinary, yet those same researchers tended to rely less on coauthors for cross-disciplinary work.
- Team roles became more specialized: software and validation tasks increased, while conceptual and management roles decreased.
The paper argues that LLMs are coinciding with a broader reorganization of scientific exploration, collaboration, and division of labor.
