MineBench says Opus 5.0 beats Fable 5 on build quality but costs 64% more
ENT_Alam · reddit · 2026-07-27
MineBench’s latest comparison says Opus 5.0 is a clear step up over Fable 5 on its Minecraft-style benchmark:
- Average inference time: 32m 10.2s for Opus 5.0 vs. 18m 04s for Fable, or 78% slower.
- Total cost for 15 builds: $89.97 for Opus 5.0 vs. $54.93 for Fable, making Opus 64% more expensive in this run.
- Average JSON size: 91.00 MiB for Opus, roughly 3× Fable’s 30.65 MiB.
The author says Opus 5.0 looks better than Opus 4.8 and may now be at or above Fable on the benchmark, with more detailed builds and better interior handling. But it is also highly token-inefficient: at max reasoning effort it often hits the output cap before finishing JSON, forcing reruns and inflating benchmark cost.
