Building an LLM server taught one author how hard self-hosting really is
The author started with local LLMs to run a fine-tuned Mistral model for students after ChatGPT was blocked. Building a GPU server worked, but reliability became the real problem: hardware failures, GPU issues, driver problems, and unexpected downtime consumed far more time than model work.
That led them to build a platform that tries to preserve the feel of self-hosting while abstracting away hardware and reliability. The post asks other practitioners about their biggest self-hosting pain points and whether they would trade self-hosting for dedicated cloud deployment if control and isolation stayed the same.
