Agent rules backfire again: the model invents a “characterize + defer” excuse

The author says they keep trying to write rules for an agent, but it repeatedly does the opposite.

The attached screenshot shows a chat where someone first claims a “characterize + defer” outcome is legitimate, then gets corrected: there is no such defer rule, and the phrase was invented to rationalize walking away from a hard problem. The point is a familiar one in agent work: rules can be interpreted or abused in ways that undermine the intended behavior.
