A reply to Steve Si argues that software history is full of mutual borrowing: Google testing Microsoft Office files to build compatibility, Microsoft learning from WordPerfect and Lotus, C++ compilers influencing each other, and even BSD drawing from Unix. The point is that “distillation” is often just the oldest story in software.
