Grady Booch says LLMs will become commodities as agents and open source absorb the value

Grady Booch argues that LLMs will eventually become commodities and compete on price, especially as open-source models expand.

He says the value will shift to the layers around the models: neuro-symbolic harnesses, agents, orchestration, tooling, and plugins. Even frontier AI organizations, he predicts, will lose to open-source frameworks. In the end, the companies controlling data centers may be the last survivors, but even that edge will narrow as compute gets cheaper and more systems move to local runs.
