Magic Leap exits its own AR headsets and becomes a waveguide supplier

Magic Leap is reportedly shutting down work on its own-branded AR headsets and pivoting into a waveguide technology supplier and system integrator starting in October. The article argues the company’s downfall was driven by two factors: overpromising with a cinematic demo that set unrealistic expectations, and a weak product strategy that never found a stable consumer or enterprise position.

It contrasts Magic Leap with Chinese AR/AI glasses makers such as XREAL, Thunderbird, Rokid, MYVU, and Quans: rather than selling a “next computing platform,” they focused on practical use cases like external display for phones and Switch, translation, teleprompter, navigation, camera, and AI assistants. The piece concludes that China’s mature display-module and wearables supply chain is what allowed local brands to overtake the category, while Magic Leap’s remaining value now lies in waveguide and optics know-how.
