Greg Brockman: OpenAI Abandoned Non-Profit Roots Because Compute Math Didn't Add Up

OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman revealed the inside story behind the company's shift from a non-profit to a for-profit structure. He explained that around 2017, the team realized while calculating the compute needed for AGI that they would require massive computing resources.
After looking at hardware companies like Cerebras, they recognized that securing exclusive access to advanced chips or building massive data centers would provide an overwhelming advantage. However, non-profit fundraising had a natural cap, leading Musk, Altman, Sutskever, and himself to agree that a for-profit entity was the only path forward to achieve their mission.
