Frontier labs’ AGI race may be driving earlier GPU orders, not just tax incentives

Frontier lab leaders may genuinely believe that getting ahead first creates an overwhelming AGI advantage, which pushes them to order GPUs earlier and more aggressively.

The quoted alternative theory is that hyperscalers are simply pulling forward data-center capex to capture tax breaks and avoid future backlash. The author’s reply says that view is only partly true: being years late is bad, but second movers can still catch up even when the leader has 10–100x more compute and resources, and they often waste less time exploring and can focus more sharply.
