Fable 5 beats Opus 5 on open-ended coding tasks, says developer after 24 hours
johnlindquist · x · 2026-07-26
After roughly 24 hours using Fable 5 and Opus 5 on a coding project, the author says both models produce excellent code. The key difference is that Fable 5 handles open-ended prompts better, understands the codebase more deeply, and pushes back when it sees a better implementation path, while Opus 5 performs just as well but needs more direction and tends to follow instructions more literally.
Overall verdict: both are “really, really good Claude’s,” but Fable 5 appears more thoughtful and autonomous in open-ended engineering tasks.
