DeepSeek could open source more freely thanks to vertical integration
The post argues that DeepSeek may be able to open source aggressively because it can co-design models and chips, keeping deployment costs low enough that competitors cannot easily undercut it.
The accompanying quote from Liang Wenfeng says DeepSeek does not expect open source to destroy its business model if it only targets around 6x profit or roughly 10 months of cost recovery. At that level, open source has limited impact; but if a company aims for 100x profit, third-party deployments become a real threat because they can run at lower cost.
He also frames open source as a long-term, sustainable strategy that may give DeepSeek more room to grow and improve its odds of reaching AGI.
