Reddit says China’s open-model play is shifting from power users to enterprises

A Reddit user argues that China’s open-model strategy is entering a new phase after Qwen announced 3.8 as open weights at more than 2 trillion parameters.
The post lays out a three-stage theory: first, smaller capable open models pull power users away from frontier closed models; next, very large models such as Kimi K3 and GLM 5.2 target organizations with enough hardware to self-host; and eventually those enterprises may stop buying closed-model APIs altogether. The author says they now expect Chinese open models in the 9B–35B range to be less of a priority until later in the year.
