Stripe Reportedly in Talks to Acquire OpenRouter for $10B to Dominate Agent Economy

imjustnewatai · x · 2026-07-25

Stripe is reportedly in talks to acquire model routing platform OpenRouter for around $10 billion. OpenRouter was valued at just $1.3 billion less than two months ago, marking an nearly 8x jump.

The strategic logic ties directly into Stripe's ongoing AI infrastructure buildout: Stripe recently launched wallets enabling AI agents to spend money, alongside streaming payments for real-time per-token billing. Meanwhile, OpenRouter processes over 200 trillion tokens monthly, connecting 10 million users to 400+ models from 70+ providers.

If the deal closes, Stripe will own both sides of the agent economy—the money agents spend and the infrastructure connecting them to intelligence.
