Tesla posts record revenue but sees profit collapse as AI bets begin to consume cash
Tesla’s Q2 looked strong on the top line but weak underneath.
- Revenue hit $28.24B, a Q2 record and roughly $3B above Wall Street expectations.
- Deliveries reached 480,126 vehicles, up 25% YoY and a quarterly high.
- Energy storage deployments rose to 13.5 GWh, and services revenue jumped 50% to $4.58B.
- FSD paid subscriptions climbed to 1.48M, up 56% YoY.
- Optimus and Cybercab also entered production, but still at an early stage.
Profitability weakened sharply:
- Operating profit fell to $398M, down 57% YoY.
- Operating margin dropped from 4.1% to 1.4%.
- Free cash flow turned negative $1.1B.
- Capex surged to $5.79B, implying much heavier spending ahead.
Elon Musk framed the spending spree as an investment in robotaxis, humanoid robots and AI compute, while Tesla CFO said 2026 capex will exceed $25B and could keep rising.
