Creating a chat in a multi-folder Codex project can brick the whole Windows app
felix9ia · ghdev · 2026-07-24
What happened
In Codex Desktop on Windows, creating a chat inside a multi-folder project can poison the whole app with a persistent “Oops, an error has occurred” screen. Quitting and reopening lands on the same error again.
Recovery
The reporter says the UI can only be recovered by manually deleting the two new project records and the persisted selected-project reference from %USERPROFILE%\.codex\.codex-global-state.json.
Impact
- The repositories and existing conversations were not corrupted
- The error should ideally be scoped to the broken project, not the entire app
- Restarting should return to a safe projectless home state instead of reopening the error boundary
