Windows Codex Desktop can hang for minutes during applypatch
A Windows user reports that Codex Desktop sometimes spends several minutes at applypatch, even for tiny edits that add or change one or two lines.
Controlled measurements
On a 78-byte UTF-8 text file in a writable local workspace, the reporter measured:
- Create file: 3.671 s
- Change one line: 6.930 s
- Change one line again: 6.188 s
- Delete file: 6.531 s
For one update, an independent file watcher saw the filesystem change about 6.16 s after applypatch started, while applypatch returned only about 40 ms after the file changed.
What they observed
- Warm reads of the same source file were around 2 ms.
- Cold reads were about 0.5 s.
- Trend Micro Real-Time Monitor was scanning both source files and Codex LocalCache files.
- The reporter suspects antivirus overhead contributes, but not enough to explain the intermittent 3–4 minute hangs.
Constraint
They cannot add Codex or project directories to antivirus exclusions.
