Stripe is reportedly in talks to buy OpenRouter for about $10 billion

Stripe is reportedly in talks to acquire OpenRouter for around $10B, according to the WSJ, just days after the AI model marketplace raised $113M at a $1.3B valuation.
The logic is strategic rather than just financial: Stripe already processes OpenRouter’s payments, so owning it would combine billing with AI request routing. That could give Stripe usage data and influence over pricing across multiple model providers, as customers increasingly mix models by task, cost, and traffic.
The core bet is that model choice becomes a basic infrastructure layer, similar to payments, and that the platform sitting between buyers and labs captures outsized leverage.
