OpenAI futurist says intelligence has a physical ceiling, not infinite takeoff

OpenAI Chief Futurist Joshua Achiam pushes back on the usual “unbounded intelligence” and recursive self-improvement story.

He argues that physical constraints imply a ceiling on computation per unit volume and energy, which in turn sets a ceiling on intelligence. In that view, the eventual winner is not whoever gets infinitely smarter, but whoever reaches the saturation point first and can scale compute most effectively.
