Conference slide says Graeme Segal is the mathematician AI will replace last
AlexKontorovich · x · 2026-07-24
The post jokes that Graeme Segal will be the last mathematician replaced by AI, while the attached conference slide makes the point more explicitly: he is “the type of mathematician that will be last to be replaced by AI.”
The slide contrasts two modes of mathematics:
- Conceptualization of structure: novel definitions, axioms, and new frameworks
- Craft of mathematics: elegant, complete arguments
The point is that AI may automate the craft side sooner, while high-level conceptual work remains the hardest to replace.
