Opinion: Chinese Open Labs Likely Know More About US AI Frontier

The author points out that because many employees in US frontier labs are Chinese, details about internals and economics leak easily back to peers in China through shared hometowns and universities.
This leads to an interesting phenomenon: the US public, open labs, and allied groups very likely have a worse understanding of the state of the US AI frontier than people in Chinese open labs. The author argues that the knowledge gap between the Frontier and China is actually smaller than the gap between the Frontier and the US.
