Microsoft says its MAI models are now being routed into first-party products

Satya Nadella argues that the key to spreading frontier AI benefits is to optimize the full cost-to-outcome frontier: the right model for each task, plus the surrounding context, skills, tools, memory, and agent harness.

Microsoft says its MAI model family was built with clean data lineage and optimized for learning transfer from generalist to specialized enterprise skills.
The company says frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic remain part of the orchestration stack, but the model is only one part of the system.
Microsoft emphasizes product-specific evals and model independence: its hill-climbing should continue even if a model is removed.
It says MAI models are already outperforming general-purpose frontier models in some use cases while using a fraction of the tokens.
Early routing is happening across GitHub Copilot, Excel, and Outlook, with expansion planned for Copilot Chat, PowerPoint, and more.
Microsoft says these lessons will also be exposed to enterprise customers through Foundry and its broader toolchain.
