Ben Shindel argues that much of what makes an AI model capable now comes from things outside the model itself: tools, skills, MCPs, and an environment increasingly optimized for AI.
He suggests a model that matched Anthropic’s best model from six months ago could still be meaningfully behind once you place it in today’s better agentic ecosystem versus the world of six months ago.
