Two weeks of API tests show most AI lip-sync tools fail in real footage

What broke in two weeks of API tests
The author stress-tested a 30-second clip plus an ElevenLabs Spanish track across most AI lip-sync APIs and found that many products fail in production-like conditions.
- Common failure modes: hands or microphones crossing the mouth cause lower-face smearing, teeth turn into a white blur in close-ups, and multi-speaker clips often sync the wrong mouth.
- Rough ranking:
- Wav2Lip — free/open source, but low-res and cumbersome to run.
- HeyGen — polished, but weaker lip sync on the author's real footage than dedicated tools.
- Sync (sync.so) — the only tool that held up on close-ups and even survived an obstruction test; not perfect on fast head turns, but the only one the author would send to a client.
The bottom line: if your job is syncing real client footage to new audio, the field is much thinner than the marketing suggests.
