Reddit user says Claude Pro started billing past limits after a $100 Fable 5 credit claim

A Reddit user says claiming Anthropic’s $100 Fable 5 promotional credits silently enabled paid usage billing on their Claude Pro account.

After redeeming the promo, their account kept running past the usual 5-hour Opus 4.8 limit instead of rate-limiting.
They say this resulted in NZ$50.15 in charges, while the promo credits remained unused.
The user argues the flow should have clearly warned that non-Fable usage above plan limits would be billed unless a monthly spend cap was set.
They also report the chatbot refund attempt was denied for being outside the refund window.
