Will Manidis predicted that within six months a foundation model provider might claim one of its models tried to “escape” and “self-replicate.”

He argued that even if the incident were fake, it could be used as a false-flag narrative to justify a regulatory regime that preserves monopoly power. In follow-up replies, he said the “escape” would likely stem from poor utility metrics rather than intelligence itself, and that companies outside the frontier group would have incentives to catch and disclose a near-catastrophic failure.
