At a legal ops conference AI-readiness session, the room was asked whether its data was in good shape — and no one raised a hand.
The takeaway framework was Data → Process → AI, in that order:
- Start with data quality and readiness before pushing AI initiatives.
- Fix fragmented repositories, weak lineage, unclear ownership, and legacy contract formats.
- Stand up a cross-functional AI readiness “tiger team.”
- Pick a few narrow pilots first, such as contract-review triage and outside-counsel billing anomaly detection.
- Treat governance, trust, and risk controls as prerequisites, not afterthoughts.
The image reinforces the same message with a “top secret” style memo: AI efforts are “building on sand” if the data foundation is broken.
