Study finds frontier LLMs default to Japan in 6 of 8 models

A Cardiff and Basque research paper tested 31,680 cultural prompts across 24 languages on frontier LLMs such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
- In 6 of 8 frontier models, Japan was the most frequently referenced country in open-ended cultural questions.
- The result suggests these models may reproduce a strong Japan-centric cultural bias when asked about traditions, festivals, and everyday practices.
