Qwen’s top TTS model looks API-only for now, while its open weights lag behind
b111ue · reddit · 2026-07-22
A Reddit user asks whether Qwen is starting to keep its best models behind paid APIs. They point to Qwen-Audio-3.0-TTS-Plus, which currently sits near the top of Artificial Analysis’s TTS leaderboard and reportedly sounds highly natural, expressive, and controllable.
The distribution split is the real issue:
- Qwen3-TTS: downloadable weights, Apache 2.0, local use, open implementation
- Qwen-Audio-3.0-TTS-Plus: available through Alibaba Cloud’s API, with no official weights release found so far
The author does not claim Qwen has abandoned open source entirely, noting that the company still releases open models. But they argue the latest move shows a gradual drift away from the open-source scene.
The post ends with a practical question: would you rather have the best model only via API, or a slightly weaker model you can download, inspect, modify, and run locally?
