A Forward Deployed Engineer is not just a coder, this thread argues. The job has three stages that build on each other: audit the system first, prove behavior with evals, then deploy and drive adoption with close KPI/SLA monitoring.
- Audit: understand the system before changing it.
- Evals: build a golden dataset and verify behavior at scale.
- Deploy: help the client adopt the system and watch operational metrics closely.
The core point is that skipping any stage breaks the next one; FDE work lives in the gap between technical correctness and real-world adoption.
