Daniel Hanchen’s 2-hour workshop covers open models, reward hacking and RL
danielhanchen · x · 2026-07-21
Daniel Hanchen says his 2-hour workshop is now out, covering:
- Open vs. closed models and how reasoning may have changed the pace of progress
- Throughput maxxing vs. accuracy loss in inference providers
- Benchmaxxing, cheating, and benchmark reliability across systems like METR, WeirdML, Deep-SWE, FrontierCode, and SWE Bench Pro
- Distillation, RL, and reward hacking, including ways to detect and stop it
- Dynamic quantization and why software optimization can matter more than hardware
He also argues that reasoning shifted model doubling times from roughly 7 months to 3.5 months and notes possible regulation risks for open source.
