Future leaders need systems thinking, not just coding or AI literacy

A personal reflection on a University of Chicago short course argues that the most important future skill is not coding, data science, or even AI literacy, but the ability to see organizations as systems.
It frames organizations like thermodynamic systems: inputs such as talent and capital, outputs such as products and impact, plus waste, bureaucracy, conflict, noise, and inefficiency. In the AI era, the author argues, leaders matter less as task managers and more as stewards of energy flow, context, ethics, team dynamics, and long-term vision.
The post concludes that the future belongs to a "systemic generalist": someone who can move from technical detail to strategic vision, from physics to ethics, and from data to human storytelling.
