A solo builder says his AI horse-racing handicapping app just got its first paying customer, while also surfacing the classic hard parts of shipping an AI product.
- The app, HandicapIQ, reads a race program from PDF or phone photo and returns pace analysis, contenders, win probabilities, fair odds, and a bet recommendation or “no play.”
- He says the AI itself was only about 20% of the work; the hard part was PDF extraction, cost control, and making results deterministic.
- One bug silently sent entire programs to the model, spiking costs to about $20/day before being fixed.
- Another issue was random outputs because temperature had been left unset; fixing that solved inconsistent picks.
- In two weeks he got 37 organic signups, about 34% race usage, one $29/month customer, and users returning on their own. Next up is a retention loop around grading races and tracking records.
