Claude gets baited with a fake Jacobian-conjecture “dream proof”
joecole · x · 2026-07-21
A user turned off web search in Claude and spent the session pretending they had discovered a proof-like result “in a dream,” using a screenshot of a claimed counterexample to the Jacobian conjecture.
The joke lands because the model dutifully checks the claim, while the poster knows it is something geometers have been chasing for decades. The thread also notes that a genuine counterexample would be extremely unlikely to emerge as an exact, error-free degree-7 polynomial map from memory.
