A U.S. judge approved Anthropic’s $1.5 billion settlement with authors whose books were used to train Claude.
- The case began after writers accused the company of using pirated copies of their books.
- The judge said training on books was fair use, but separately found that storing more than 7 million pirated books in a central library was itself infringement.
- The settlement is now the largest known in a U.S. copyright case.
