AI governance should act like a seat belt, not a stop sign
Prof. Chesterman argues that governance should help systems move faster with greater confidence, rather than block innovation. He says businesses need clarity, not just generic compliance language.
His core point is that AI changes governance from managing a relatively stable dataset to managing live data flows: systems can retrieve information in real time, connect to other systems, remember interactions, and act on constantly changing data. As a result, it is no longer enough to simply ask users to tick a consent box.
He says good governance should focus on:
- what information a system can access
- what it can infer
- where that information may go
- what actions it is authorised to take
