Biotech company Revel Pharma is working on developing the first medicines to repair the aging extracellular matrix. Their recent research, published in *Nature Communications*, has garnered significant attention. While traditional biology focuses heavily on cells, they actually live in structural tissue—the extracellular matrix—made of collagen and elastin. Over time, chemical damage accumulates in the matrix, causing skin sagging, artery stiffening, and driving oxidative stress. This is a root cause of aging that has been largely neglected. Natively, the human body cannot repair this damage. However, certain bacteria possess enzymes capable of breaking these chemical bonds. Revel Pharma is utilizing this mechanism to potentially reverse aging from a foundational structural level.
