AI Boom Wipes Out Entry-Level Software Jobs: Employment for 22-25 Age Group Drops 23%

The AI boom is creating a generational divide in software jobs. Since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, US software developer employment for those aged 22-25 has declined by 23%, while employment among developers aged 41-49 has risen by 18%.

This creates a 41 percentage point gap between the youngest and most experienced groups. Companies are reluctant to pay for entry-level work that AI tools like Claude Code can handle in minutes, yet the demand for senior developers remains stronger than ever.
