Google is reportedly building a new inference chip, codenamed Frozen v2, to ease its compute shortage and better serve Gemini.
- The chip would hardwire parts of Gemini’s architecture into silicon rather than act as a general TPU replacement.
- Google employees reportedly expect 6–10x better token-per-watt efficiency than its newest in-house chips for inference.
- The project is tied to pressure on Google Cloud, which has reportedly been turning away some deals because of capacity constraints.
- Planned deployment is as early as 2028.
