New Gemini API keys stop working in Python
CoolAd5798 · reddit · 2026-07-20
A user reports that a newer Gemini API key format starting with AQ no longer works in Python.
They say:
- the old unrestricted AIz... keys are no longer generated
- calling the API through the Google Gen AI SDK now throws ACCESSTOKENTYPEUNSUPPORTED
- updating to the latest google-genai SDK and setting the key in the environment did not help
- similar reports exist in Google forums, but they have not found a fix
The post asks whether anyone has actually solved the issue.
