Google’s rumored Frozen v2 chip could deeply tie hardware to Gemini

Google may be preparing a chip nicknamed Frozen v2 that embeds parts of Gemini’s architecture directly into silicon.
- Reported target efficiency: 6–10× more tokens per watt than Google’s newest TPUs.
- Planned deployment: as early as 2028.
- The chip is meant to relieve a severe AI compute crunch; Google Cloud has reportedly turned away some outside customers.
- The cost of that efficiency is less flexibility: future Gemini models would likely need to stay compatible with the same underlying architecture.
This is another sign that Google is trying to move from general-purpose accelerators to model-tuned hardware.
