The Economics of AI Compute Power Consumption

robleclerc · x · 2026-07-20

Citing forecasts, globally optimized AI servers consumed about 95 TWh of power last year, expected to surge 84% to 175 TWh by 2026.

The author did the math: at commercial rates, the 95 TWh consumed in 2025 translates to an annual electricity cost of roughly $10 to $14 billion. While seemingly massive in absolute terms, it's merely a drop in the bucket compared to the $10 trillion global energy bill, underscoring that AI infrastructure scale is still in its infancy.
