How Open-Source ML Culture Shaped the Industry's Rise

The author points out that the rapid rise of machine learning (now AI) around 2011-2013 was largely attributed to the extremely open culture of "frictionless reproducibility" at the time. However, between 2018 and 2021, an "enclosure movement" occurred in the industry, leading to tightened open resources, which spawned today's unusual debates over "closed AI".
