Why Open AI Research Can't Easily Be Done for Free

Quoting Paul Graham, the author points out that programming languages receive a massive amount of "free work" because people inherently enjoy contributing to them. Open AI research, however, is different. Due to exorbitant GPU costs, it is nearly impossible to sustain through "free labor" or academic salaries alone.
Using this to respond to a comment about the US government's AI R&D funding strategy, he argues that the practical constraints of open AI research go beyond mere ideology: compute costs ultimately dictate whether the research can be sustained.
